The 2022 Chardonnay Fosil hails from Zuccardi’s San Pablo Vineyard in the Uco Valley. It was aged in 75% concrete vats, with the remainder going into used French oak barrels. In the glass, it’s yellow with a greenish sheen. The complex aromas range from green apple peel to chamomile, lime, and mountain herbs such as huacatay, with a pastry backdrop adding further depth. On the palate, it’s lean and dry with a chalky texture and refreshingly tart acidity. The vibrant character is a showcase for the terroir with its austere, herbal notes. Better to keep it for another couple of years to let it truly come into its own. - By Joaquín Hidalgo on July 2023

The journey of Familia Zuccardi is a summation of the contemporary Argentine wine scene: they currently make some of the most interesting reds and whites in the country when just 20 years ago, they were unknown in the fine wine market. Back in the 1980s, they produced reds and whites from the east of Mendoza under the second generation of the Zuccardi family, led by José Alberto, who built a mass-market business for Santa Julia. Then, in the 2000s, with the third generation, Sebastián Zuccardi and the R&D department were tasked with coming up with an ambitious plan for vineyards in the Uco Valley, which would culminate with the construction of Bodega Piedra Infinita (2016) in Paraje Altamira. The high-end project led the Zuccardis to split their operations between Bodega Santa Julia and Zuccardi Valle de Uco. On their quest for colder climes, they radically redrew the map of the Uco Valley, becoming the driving force behind the establishment of new Geographic Indications while also acting as champions of new soil-focused approaches, of which their parcel wines are excellent examples. The Chardonnay Fósil has established itself as a benchmark for the grape variety and the San Pablo area. Similarly, the Chardonnay Botánico, crafted in the Gualtallary terroir, contributes to a collection of premium white wines from Argentina. These terroir-driven wines display the purity and expression of the vineyard, complemented by meticulous farming practices. This attention to detail is also evident in other ranges such as Sauvignon Blanc and Verdejo Polígonos de Valle de Uco and the Chardonnay Zuccari Q.
