Cotes de Beaune Rouge 2019
Domaine Joseph Drouhin
West Sonoma Coast, California
$56.99
We tasted this last week and thought this showed the vintage character well, in the nose a lot of ripe red fruits, but the palate brings you back to Burgundy. This wine comes from grapes harvested on some parcels of the Drouhin Family properties, including a large amount of declassified fruit from Clos des Mouches. This shows well out of the gate and if more fruit is what you are looking for with the earth and spice shades of Burgundy, this is perfect.
Harvest: grapes harvested by hands in open-work crates. If necessary, a careful sorting is proceeded.
Vinification: total destemming. In accordance with the terroir and the profile of the vintage, we do 2 to 3 weeks of fermentation and maceration in small open vats, marked by punching of the cap and pumping-over. The yeasts are indigenous (natural). Pressing in a vertical press. Separation of the ends of the presses based on tasting.
Aging: in oak barrels including 20% of new barrels. The ageing lasts between 12 to 16 months.
Tasting note: "The 2019 Côte de Beaune Rouge contains declassified Premier Cru, including part of Clos des Mouches, among others. It has a more open-knit bouquet compared to the preceding Rully Rouge, presenting red berry fruit mixed with sous-bois and a light sea spray scent. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a smooth texture and candied red cherries and strawberry mixed with vanilla on the finish. This will have wide appeal."
