Based on the 2019 vintage and disgorged this year with four grams per liter dosage, Péters's NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grande Réserve wafts from the glass with aromas of peaches, pastry cream, dried fruits, citrus oil and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and vinous, it's racy and concentrated, with a chiseled profile and a long, saline finish. The fine base vintage marks this out as a particular success.

The genial Rodolphe Péters presides over this 19-hectare reference point in Mesnil sur Oger, where Chardonnay shines at its most pure and chalky. Vinification is in stainless steel, yet grapes picked at full maturity and aging on the lees contribute texture and depth, which means that, while racy, these wines are never austere. Today, Péters is delaying his releases a little, pushing for six months more sur lattes for his flagship Les Chétillons and Montjolys bottlings, followed by a year on cork, starting with his wines from the 2017 vintage. Readers should note that the excellence of the 2019 vintage translates to unusually concentrated, serious entry-level bottlings from Péters in this set of releases, so this is definitely a year to buy across the range.

The NV Brut Cuvée de Réserve Grand Cru is open, effusive and a real delight to taste. Soaring aromatics and soft curves give this 2019-base Champagne tons of sheer appeal. Apricot, tangerine peel, spice and dried flowers abound in this racy, open-knit Champagne. The Cuvée de Réserve is rarely this charming at this stage. The slightly lower dosage of 5 grams per liter works so well. Disgorged: August 2022.

It’s always a pleasure to taste with Rodolphe Péters, as his enthusiasm is palpable. The estate is still a construction zone, but there has been significant progress. As for the wines, I was especially taken with the 2017 and 2016-base Champagnes. Both vintages had more than their share of challenges, and yet the wines are strong. I also tasted the 2015 Les Chétillons. Two thousand-fifteen was a challenging vintage here from the start, so it is not a surprise that the Chétillons shows some of the signatures of a year where the wines often have some vegetal notes. In addition to the new releases, I also went back and revisited a few wines from last year that showed poorly in the offices of Péters’s US importer.

This 100% Grand Cru Chardonnay non-vintage Champagne has an inherent complexity on the palate thanks to the addition of at least 45% reserve wines to the blend. Their perpetual reserve of wines which is inspired by the Solera Method, is enriched with more than 25 different years, with vintages going back to 1988. Disgorged Oct-2023. Dosage 6g/L.
