Ken and I cannot stress at how good this wine is for the money! We just tasted this and several other VERY EXCITING Burgundy new releases and we believe these are incredible values for White Burgundy.
Our tasting note: A medium straw yellow, youthful. A very fragrant med+ nose of green apples, pear, lemon curd and lemon oil, a light salinity and mineral note adds further complexity and depth. On the palate this has med/med+ acidity, a medium body, with a very pleasant savoriness and salinity to the gorgeous orchard and sweet citrus notes. Fresh, dense, and vibrant on the palate, this has a long, resonating finish. There is A LOT of wine in the bottle for the $ on this little number!
- Grapes: 100% Chardonnay
- 35-year-old vines
- Soil: clay and limestone
- Vinified 1/3 used French oak barrels to add richness and body and 2/3 stainless-steel tanks to retain freshness and liveliness.
Domaine Paquet - Jean-Paul Paquet
Like most Burgundy winemakers, Jean-Paul Paquet and his son Yannick are from a multi-generational winemaking family. JP's grandfather grew grapes and also made barrels. His father re-settled the domaine in the Pouilly-Fuissé region.
Jean-Paul grew up helping his father in the vines. It’s a good thing, too. His father died young and Jean-Paul took over the estate in 1978. He and his wife, Monique, have since enlarged the estate, which is centered in the town of Fuissé. Their son, Yannick (pictured above), completed his studies in enology and viticulture and has joined the parents in the family business.
The Paquet winemaking style is very traditional. They only harvest by hand. They use old oak to mature their wines because they don’t want the oak flavors to mask the wonderful qualities that their hallowed vineyards impart on the Chardonnay grapes.
Jean-Paul says that passion isn’t enough for a good winemaker. He needs to use his experience every day to grow good grapes and then make good wines. Jean-Paul patiently “watches and listens to” the grapes as they are growing and then patiently “watches and listens to” the wines as they are maturing in the cellar. You’ll find that he does his work very well. The wines are authentic to the unique land in the Pouilly-Fuissé region and they exhibit remarkable finesse and elegance.
