Segni di Langa Barolo N.I.C.B.A.R.R. 2020
NICBARR = Name In Code Bricco Ambroggio Ravera Roere di Santa Maria

92pts Vinous Media
The 2020 Barolo Segni di Langa is an outstanding wine from Gian Luca Colombo. Pliant and open-knit, the 2020 is attractive right out of the gate. Translucent red-toned fruit, orange peel, spice, leather and tobacco all meld together effortlessly. The 2020 is a blend taken from Bricco Ambrogio, Roere di Santa Maria and Ravera, all very good sites, but perhaps not the very best sites. At times, the Segni di Langa reminds me of the traditionally made Barolos of the 1990s. The aromatics aren't perfectly focused and there are some slight imperfections from the wood, and yet those qualities somehow add to the wine's allure. This bottling has the potential to be exceptional in future vintages. Drinking Window: 2025 - 2035

Our Tasting Note: Medium ruby core, lighter pink edge. The nose is med+ and grows, crushed rose petals, truffle, red cherry, raspberry, red currants, blood orange zest, and subtle notes of tar. Texturally finessed and classic at the same time, really a unique expression all his own. Tannins are med+ to firm, ripe, long and youthful, well structured but in harmony for this age. A long, fresh finish closes it out.

A blend of 3 Barolo Cru vineyard sites across the region to give a classic Barolo blend of multiple sites, as it was always done in the early years of production. Maria Teresa of Bartolo Mascarello still adheres to this tradition and makes one of the world's most sought after wines - a singular Barolo! Macerated 30-55 days on the skins, then aged in large neutral oak, the classic recipe for winemaking in Barolo!

Vineyards:
  • Bricco Ambrogio (Roddi) - south/southeast/west exposure
  • Roere di Santa Maria (La Morra) - southern exposure
  • Ravera (Novello) (starting in 2020) - eastern exposure
Vinification: Maceration with submerged cap 30-55 days depending on the vintage
Maturation: 100% in large Austrian Oak (neutral) for 18 months, then terra cotta clay tanks for 3-6 months – no filtration, no clarification.
