93pts James Suckling
White Rioja is not traditionally about fruit purity, favoring oak aging with the fine yeast lees, which creates a more savory, nutty/floral tone to the wine, along with a chalky texture infused into its subtle citrus and stone-fruit character. Riviere's "La Bastid" shows an extended, warming and savory-tinged finish, with the subtly unctuous echo of stone fruit like nectarine. Delicious!

Lured to Spain to help Telmo Rodriguez convert to biodynamics, Oliviere Rivière stayed in Rioja and began making his own wines. His ‘La Bastid’ is richly textured and wonderfully saline, without too much influence from oak. An ideal bridge between modern Rioja and the whites of López de Heredia. Food Pairing Grilled octopus, oysters, cream sauces

La Bastid is a blend of Viura and Garnacha Blanca originally from nine plots of vines around Labastida in Rioja Alavesa, but with the 2019 vintage, he has moved this project to the red clay-limestone soils of the village of Cárdenas, where he has been expanding his vineyard holdings. Olivier considers this wine his Côtes de Nuits Blanc in his internal hierarchy. Before the 2016 vintage, this wine was labeled as Jequitiba.
