My Tasting Note
Ruby red and vibrant at the edges. A classic nose of cassis, currants, plum, and a touch of capsicum pepper spice. Some rose petal notes and a smoky mineral note (something I tend to find from cabernet in volcanic soils). The palate is juicy, with a medium body verging into med+. Medium grain tannin. The flavor density is excellent, a lot of flavor without a lot of weight. The finish is excellent too, med+.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Palazzotto is spicy in the glass, as cedar and ground ginger shavings give way to dusty rose and red currants. This is elegant yet finessed, with creamy textures lifted by brisk acidity as a wave of mineral-tinged wild berries washes easily across the palate. The 2018 leaves a sour twang of citrus and raspberry and subtle grippy tannins that frame the wine without slowing its momentum. While already showing quite well, this beautifully balanced rendition of Palazzotto should excel through medium-term cellaring.

Maculan continues to show that while the family’s international fame stems from their sweet wines, Acininobili and Torcolato, their prowess with Bordeaux varieties is second to none. The 2018s exemplify this point. Maculan is located in Breganze, a small town in the Province of Vicenza, northeast of Verona. Here we find a hilly terrain with volcanic soils and a strong confluence of cooling effects from the mountainous north and warm currents from the south and Adriatic sea. Combined with what other wineries, like Inama, are accomplishing in Colli Berici and Vignalta in Colli Euganei, these recent efforts really show the potential of Bordeaux varieties in the Veneto.

The Maculan 2018 Breganze Cabernet Sauvignon Palazzotto makes a bold statement thanks to inky dark fruit, thick ripeness and dense extraction with black fruit flavors framed by lots of sweet oak. This full-framed red has an almost exotic quality with teriyaki or barbecue spice.
Maculan is one of a handful of red wine Veneto producers that operates outside the realm of air-dried fruit and appassimento. They also focus beautifully on international grapes, and they make some of the region's best dessert wines with the local Vespaiola grape.
