The bottled village red 2022 Corullón was produced with grapes from around 90 different plots and had a short élevage of eight months in barrel. It is 93% Mencía, 4% Jerez (Palomino), 2.5% Alicante Bouschet and 0.5% Gran Negro bottled at 13.5% alcohol. It's floral and aromatic, but compared with the more-austere 2023, it comes through as more generous, riper and a little gentler, with more fruit but with elegance and freshness that nobody expected during the torrid summer and harvest. It keeps the freshness and poise, with fine-grained tannins. 25,392 bottles and some smaller and larger formats produced. It was bottled in August and November 2023, as they had to stop for the harvest.

This is one of the best wines in all of Spain for around $50. From some of the highest altitude vineyard in Spain, Mencia from Corullon is just not the same as any other in Spain, let alone the rest of Bierzo that are several thousand feet below these vineyards tucked way up in the mountains that tower over the majestic little village of Bierzo.  As you can see from my photos, we were in some very beautiful country in Northeastern Spain.
Vineyards: Vine age ranges from 60 - 100 years old from a selection of parcels around the village of Corullon in Bierzo. Very steep slopes (30-50 degrees) at altitudes ranging from 400 to 900 meters.
Soils: 100% friable schist.
Viticulture: Everything is done by hand or mule. Practicing Organic and Biodynamic.
Winemaking: The grapes are harvested by hand, sorted and destemmed by hand. They macerate for 25 days in oak fermentors with hand punch down. Spontaneous fermentation. No fining or filtering.
Aging: Aged in used French oak, all of which was previously used either for past vintages of Corullon or to have briefly aged Petalos.
