The 2022 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a pixelated bouquet with that mélange of red and black fruit that I noticed before. It's perfumed with hints of potpourri and lovely sous-bois/mossy scents in the background. The palate is medium-bodied, with a little crunch on the entry. It's a more structured Champans than I am accustomed to; perhaps the tannins are a bit firmer and less silky in texture at the moment. This will need more time to knit together than d'Angerville's other cuvées. - By Neal Martin on March 2024

The 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Champans offers up aromas of dark berries, licorice, grilled squab, spices and vine smoke, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered palate with a sweet core of fruit framed by powdery tannins that assert themselves on the discreetly carnal finish.

The archetype of Volnay for Guillaume, and it prepares the way for Clos des Ducs. A clear bright purple. Today, the nose has a light reduction, but the fruit beneath is light on its feet yet with a fine tensile strength. This has a long backbone. An interesting, complex wine which one could easily pass over too quickly. Drink from 2031-2040. Tasted Oct 2023.

Made from 3.98 hectares in the Champans climat, located just north of the Caillerets. Two parallel plots constitute their part of the appellation (11 hectares in total). They extend from top to bottom of the Champans and hillside climate, thus taking advantage of all the characteristics of this remarkable south-east facing terroir, located in the center of the Volnay Premiers Crus. The soil is poorer and sits on a rocky limestone bench at the top of the hill as the slope tapers down and it becomes more clayey, stony and deeper.
