The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County) is elegant, polished and so pure. Precise, with gorgeous aromatic intensity, this rushes forth with sweet floral notes, red-toned fruit, mint, orange peel an spice. The 2022 is exquisite, delicious and very pretty. Dollops of Cabernet Franc and Malbec round out the blend. - By Antonio Galloni on January 2024

The latest from Morgan Twain-Peterson and Chris Cottrell, the 2021 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Bedrock and Montecillo vineyards in Sonoma. The winemakers describe the evolution of this release: "For the last few years this wine has been made as a home for a few extra barrels of Monte Rosso and Montecillo that don’t necessarily fit into the single-vineyard wines. I think this has resulted in a very nice wine for the price, but we were limited in our ability to sculpt the wine in the same way as our Old Vine Zin or California Syrah, which we view as our “Intro to Bedrock” offerings. For a couple reasons, we had the opportunity to start shaping this wine a bit more in 2021. First, after decades of selling Bedrock Vineyard Cabernet to other wineries, we moved a chunk of the fruit in-house, which means we can dial in the farming to the needs of this blend. Second, the extra volume of fruit allows us to adjust our vinification techniques and cooperage selection, pushing this wine towards a bit more plushness from valley floor fruit (and toning down a little of the austerity naturally built into our mountain sites). This is still a serious wine that I think will develop better than most Cab in the price range, but I think the improved focus has made this both a bit more complete and friendlier for your average weeknight."

Galloni, 1/2024: Morgan Twain-Peterson and Chris Cottrell draw on a stunning collection of sites for the Bedrock wines. Tasting through this range is always illuminating, as the wines are essentially a tour through many of California’s most iconic vineyards. The 2022s are a bit lighter in feel than the norm here, but typical of the vintage overall. Extractions were shortened a touch to match the style of the vintage. Overall, the 2022s impress with their balance and overall appeal. I imagine readers will have a great time exploring this range. Many of the highlights are not the usual suspects. Some of my favorites include the Sémillon Monte Rosso Vineyard, Roussanne Bien Nacido, Dolinsek Ranch Heritage Wine and Syrah (California). Beyond the wines, I have to say I am very pleased to see Bedrock move towards lower-weight bottles. It’s one thing to talk about sustainability, but something entirely different to act on it. The new bottles lower the weight of a single case of wine by 9 lbs. That’s an astonishing number, especially when multiplied across thousands of cases, and, ideally, many thousands of wineries that might follow suit.
