This is a broad shouldered Assyrtiko, dense, rich, and polished, a new wine to me I was very impressed by this wine, especially after an hour how it evolved. It reminds me of a young, powerful, dry Hunter Valley Semillon from Australia.
Estate Argyros has been established in 1903, but the Argyros family has been involved in wine production for decades before that. It is the largest private owner of vineyards in Santorini and the current landholdings exceed 120 ha, a vast, four-generations-long investment. Estate Argyros is widely acknowledged for its commitment to wines of fine quality.
Our Tasting Note: Med+ nose that grew to more pronounced, purity, with density that hints at good agin potential and how this will evolve. Notes of Mediterranean lemons, limes, quince, chipped stones and a roundness and creamy edge from the lees aging. A broad shouldered assyrtiko on the palate, rich, polished with very good acidity under the layers of youthful fruit density. Long on the finish. Superb!
- Grape variety: 100% Assyrtiko
- The most important bottling of the estate, the essence of what Estate Argyros stands for.
- Meticulously selected parcels, with ages exceeding a century (Vine age: 100–120 years old, ungrafted), from top quality areas of the island, mainly Messaria, Karterados, Pyrgos, Megalochori and Akrotiri.
- Fermented in stainless steel at cool temperatures and aged for 8 months in stainless steel tanks on fine lees
- A copybook Santorini, at least under the Argyros lenses, showing purity and race without excesses, developing for at least a decade.
