The 2022 Il Randagio, a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, is fabulous. Bright acids and floral overtones grace this exquisite, nuanced red. There's a good bit of whole clusters (40-50%), but stems aren't especially evident. The 2022 spent four months on the skins in cement and open top tanks. More than anything else, it's the freshness and purity here that stand out. What a gorgeous wine this is. - By Antonio Galloni on June 2024

The Tenuta di Carleone 2022 Il Randagio is a blend of equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc (with some whole-cluster fermentation) and comes in a screw-cap bottle with a drawing of a one-eyed bulldog on the front label that surely must be a Sean O'Callaghan alter ego. He dabbles in long maceration times and alternative cement vessels. There is a lot of creative spirit in a wine like this that reveals fresh berry tones that pop brightly. The style is full of energy. This is a well-priced red that I happily recommend, especially if you are looking for a casual but spirited expression. Some 30,000 bottles were made.
Our tasting note (2021): Elegant, red fruited, cherry, dusty floral, mineral. Lots of cherry on the palate, delicate, well-balanced, ripe, well-integrated tannins, salty finish. It offers a very authentic or individual quality with raw blackberry and cherry flavors. A blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. hand picked with some whole cluster bunches with a long maceration in cement tanks. spicy, elegant with frsh dark berries. There are whole bunches in this wine and cement tanks used; no barrels here. This is the winemaker's answer to the "Super Tuscan" being that this style is fresh and vibrant, not overly extracted or alcoholic.
Blend: Cabernet Franc and Merlot
Fermentation: in cement tanks, maceration 4 months, partial whole cluster
Aging: 12 months in cement
This is “Guercino”, a littler Guercio. Same winemaking, though instead of Sangiovese, a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Handpicked with some whole cluster bunches with a long maceration in cement tanks. Spicy, elegant with fresh dark berries. This turns the idea of “Super Tuscan” upside down.
The Randagio we tasted (2021) was ready to go, but it is not your typical Super Tuscan as it relies on freshness, minerality and fruit as opposed to ultra ripe fruit and a lot of flashy oak like the usual IGT Super Tuscans.
