**** (out of 5 stars)
John Livingstone-Learmonth (JLL)
(228-litre & 600-litre casks, bottling no earlier than July 2023, probably Sept 2023) dark red; has a nicely measured bouquet, that holds well, shows cooked red fruits, soaked raspberries. This is a good 2021, one with nice filling, wavy red-fruited content, suction in the tannins, a late chalky touch. It’s rather linear, can round out, comes with a little vintage cut and a Nordic tone, satisfying content. It extends well, gives a little flourish of fruit towards the finish, is a wine of sure quality. It’s a definite gainer with time – it will be rewarding to cellar this. “Further raising will bring a gain in structure and depth,” Patrick Jasmin – I agree. Racked 8 Oct 2022. 16,350 b, a low yield this year, 20 hl/ha. The degree was between 11.2° and 12.2° this year, chaptalised up to 12.5° overall. From 2026-27. 2046-48 Feb 2023

About Patrick Jasmin and his gorgeous Northern Rhone syrah-based wines...

Patrick Jasmin is the fourth generation of his family to work the domaine's (now) six hectares of Cote Rotie. Since 2015, there are also 12 hectares of early-drinking Collines Rhodaniennes. Jasmin uses a variety of sizes of oak, with no more than 30% new overall. The luxury cuvée, Oléa, may have a higher proportion, as it's a barrel selection, but that means that 15% to 20% new oak is more typical of the estate's main cuvée, La Giroflarie. The grapes are destemmed (since the mid-1990s), with submerged-cap fermentation for gentle extraction and about 5% Viognier. The results are perfumed wines with silky textures yet admirable structure. They certainly warrant more attention from consumers.

95% Syrah, 5-6% Viognier, both varieties planted together, all destemmed since 1996, 25-28 day vinification (except lesser years 2002, 2008 – 18 days), max temperature 25°C-28°C, only pumping overs, no cap punching since 2010, (submerged cap until 2009), with from 2015 a 52 hl tronconic oak vat used, in 2015 aged 52 hl tronconic oak vat 12 months (from 2015), then 65-75% 300-litre, 10-15% 400-litre, 5-10% 500-litre, 10-15% 600-litre oak casks (15% 228-litre oak casks used until 2013) 12 months, usually aged 65-75% 300-litre, 10-15% 400-litre, 5-10% 500-litre oak casks, 10-15% 600-litre casks 18-24 months, total new oak each year 25-30%, (2015, 2016 40% due to need to replace old casks), remaining casks up to 10 years old.
