Vineyard: Single Vineyard wine from the 20+ year old Sauvage Vineyard in Bannockburn. The vineyard itself is located under hills once prized for gold in this region, now cloaked in wild thyme and rosehip. The land below is widely sought after for Pinot Noir and the foothills are framed with vines.
94 Pts Wine Advocate
The 2020 Sauvage Vineyard Pinot Noir is from Bannockburn and is so different from the Burn Cottage Vineyard in aromatics and presence. On the nose, the wine is throaty and full, with cherries, pomegranate, raspberry pip and pink peppercorns. This is supple, rich an74d full, with pastry, pepper-rolled pastrami, violets and brine. Excellent wine. It’s bigger than the Burn Cottage Vineyard. There is a lovely chalky and gently grippy tannin splay through the finish. Sixteen percent whole cluster, 20 days on skins, three coopers and four different clones: clone 5/Pommard, clones 6, 115 and 777.
Sauvage vineyard is 5.8 hectares of well established Pinot Noir vineyard planted in 1999, located on the North East side of Felton Road, where it sits between the Felton Road MacMuir Vineyard and the Mt Edward Muirkirk Vineyard. There is the diversity of 5 Pinot Noir clones: 667, 777, 5, 6, and 115, with a variety of rootstocks. While there had been some organic management of the vineyard previously, from the beginning of the 2018 vintage growing season we started its transition to biodynamic farming to partner the Burn Cottage Vineyard. The Sauvage Vineyard will ensure our Moonlight Race Pinot Noir into the future (in combination with a selection from Burn Cottage Vineyard) and feature it as a single vineyard wine. The Bannockburn sub region has contributed significantly to the reputation of Central Otago Pinot Noir . We are very happy to be alongside many of the wineries that we have strong connections and long friendships with, and it has been exciting to welcome this site into the winery with its own unique character and expression.
