Marsannay Rouge Clos du Roy 2022
Domaine Jean Fournier

Grape varieties: 100% Pinot Noir, planted between 1945 and 2000.

Our Tasting Note: Deeper ruby color, slightly darker. A pronounced nose with much more focus than the Bourgogne, you an tell there is more more superior fruit from a superior vineyard site, red berries and cherries, a slight touch of oak, subtle spices (50% whole cluster), a beautifully layered nose. On the palate this is wonderfully ripe but focused, balanced, and layered, it should age effortlessly and provide a lot of pleasure over it's lifetime. Freshness, layered, minerality buried deep in the flesh of this wine. Intense palate flavor intensity that is light on its feet. Long, complex, slightly tight finish hints confidently at a long life ahead, though you can most certainly appreciate its charms now with a decant.

• Vineyard: A selection from 2.7 hectares, a blend of 2 sectors of “Clos du Roy”: Walnut and the Pau.
Terroir: On a fairly steep hillside, facing due east (hot and early because it is sheltered from the wind). The soils are dominated by limestones of Comblanchien, they are often too hard to be cultivated in vines, but here they are present in the form of sandstone litates. The high levels of limestone (similar to what can be found in certain sectors of the Mountain from Reims in Champagne), gives the wine a mineral and saline dimension that only time reveals.
• Viticulture: Organic Agriculture. The oldest vines are plowed by horse, and the work is manual, without tractor.
• Harvest: Manual in small 15 kg boxes, with sorting into vat room.
Vinification and aging: Fermented with 50% whole cluster, moderate punching down and pumping over, spontaneous fermentation in
native yeasts. Aging in barrels of 600 and 228 liters (approximately 25% wood new) for 12 months. The wines are then blended to be
re-toned and aged for 6 months in demi-muids.
