2022 "Il Guercio" nyr
Tenuta di Carleone

95+ Wine Advocate for 2021...
Named after a Tuscan word for "one-eyed rascal," the Tenuta di Carleone 2021 Il Guercio (in a bottle with a white wax capsule) is all Sangiovese with up to 40% whole cluster and as a much as five months of extended maceration in cement vats only. The wine delivers a very clear and variety-faithful expression with bright plum, wild cherry and iris root. You can taste the artisanal approach of this pretty wine. There are dusty limestone sensations that add to a cooling finish. Fruit comes from high-elevation vineyards at 650 meters in elevation in Lamole. Production is 16,000 bottles, and I'm pleased to recommend this very special wine.
93 Vinous for 2021...
The 2021 Il Guercio is all class. Bright, silky and beautifully perfumed, the 2021 possesses tons of finesse. Sweet red Sangiovese fruit opens first, followed by a burst of exotic floral and spice notes that lend character. There's real substance and presence here. Racy and yet light on its feet, Il Guercio is stellar in 2021. - By Antonio Galloni on June 2023

Fermentation: in cement and open bins, maceration 4 months in cement
Ageing: 12 months cement

"100% Sangiovese selected from an old terraced vineyard just outside the beautiful hamlet of Lamole, 650m above sea level. The grapes are picked late to get meximum ripeness from this wonderful high-lying vineyard. Fermented in cement tanks with 30% whole bunches. The very long maceration process of 4-5 months gives this wine a wonderful fruit character, which differentiates it from more classic styles." - Winery

Working organically and biodynamically, O’Callahan and his colleague Karl Egger are looking for a lighter-bodied, fresher wine, that strikes a balance between structure and fruit. Fermentation is spontaneous in cement. A small portion of the wine is crushed by foot and begins fermentation in an open bin, and then remains in maceration in that same bin for over three months. Using about 20% whole cluster, the rest of the grapes are destemmed. The wine macerates 40-60 days, with very small pump-overs. The wine from each vineyard site is fermented and aged separately until final blending. Aged 18 months in a mix of tonneaux, cement and stainless steel. Sean avoids filtration and fining.
