92 pts Galloni - Vinous
The 2020 Chianti Classico is bright, elegant and wonderfully translucent, with lovely red fruit character and all the elegance of Radda coming through nicely. Mint, blood orange, pipe tobacco and spice linger on the brilliant, delineated finish.
Grapes: 90% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot
Vines: Planted between 1972-2004 on slopes between 1,300 – 1,870 ft.
Aging: 12 Months in large casks
Volpaia sits on a hilltop just north and west of the town of Radda and is considered a Radda producer. You can see it a mile or 2 away as the crow flies from the Montevertine vineyards well above those vines up a large and steep hillside. Volpaia was built in the 11th century as a fortified village on the Florence-Siena border. Unlike Brolio, Meleto and other Chianti-area castles, Volpaia is a “terra murata,” a “walled village.” The vineyards are predominantly in alberese and galestro sandstone soils rich in ancient seabed fossils, suitable for the production of elegant and long-lived reds. Volpaia is committed to organic farming practices in all of its estate vineyards and is a leader in the region for organic farming certifications. Organic is a philosophy and for Volpaia, well before the world started talking about Organic, they have always dealt with their vineyards and fields in a natural way: no pesticides, no synthetic chemicals, or natural fertilizers.
