SO, the secret: The Pian delle Mole Langhe Nebbiolo is declassified Barolo. It could be used to make Barolo with but she declassifies a portion of it! I had the wine several times last year and loved it (and so did many of you who placed case re-orders after you got to taste it).
A Langhe Nebbiolo is generally made the same way as Barolo and Barbaresco, from the same grape, but because of a legal technicality such as the vineyard site, it cannot be called a Barolo or a Barbaresco.
For me, the Pian delle Mole is the best Langhe Nebbiolo one can buy for the money ($31.99). It drinks easily like a $50-60 Barolo and is accessible now, but you can cellar them too if you can manage to keep your hands off! This is a Barolo in all but name!
About the Wine
Aptly named after the ancient millstones occasionally discovered in the woods of the Serradenari vineyard "Mole". Serradenari being located at the highest point in the region, offered a refuge for the peasants escaping the Black Death in the Middle Ages and by the year 1400 was known as Sara’ ‘Dne, or coin mountain.
100% declassified Barolo from Giulia's Serradenari cru at the top of La Morra – the highest elevation vineyard planted in Barolo. Part of this wine is from blocks that go into her other Barolo - and the other portion is from vines that are of the same age as her best blocks but face north. North-facing these days is a good thing, especially in warmer years. It has the same character that her Barolo wines do but in a lighter and less tannic frame (read: drink now with a LOT of pleasure). If the top traditional Barolo names like Burlotto, Mascarello, and Rinaldi make tier 1 Langhe Nebbiolo, I'd make a case that this wine should be in the same group! It is also HALF the price or better!
• Northern exposition at 500 meters (1,640 feet) above sea level
• Fermentation in stainless steel tank for 15 days
• Aged 14 months in stainless steel and 500-L tonneau (neutral French oak)
The 2022 Barolo Vintage Sneak Peak
In Piedmont, the winter was especially cold and dry with little snow. The gentle arrival of spring delivered some snow melt from the mountains which somewhat helped replenish water tables.
Late spring, however, saw temperatures rise and the region fell into the grips of a vicious heatwave, before a baking hot summer arrived. Although conditions were dry, there was enough residual water in the soil to stave off the worst effects of drought. To combat drought, producers were also able to utilize clever canopy management as well as effective irrigation, however, some fruit was inevitably lost and yields were down.
Although more time is needed for a full report, it is likely that the vintage will be smaller than usual, however, the fruit is likely to be richly concentrated. It could well transpire to be a very fine vintage, even if it does come in a small package. (Excerpted from Wine-Searcher.com
