If this wine were in Vittoria it would be $35-40, but since it is in the next town over in Valle dell'Acate, we get a great price on what is the best wine from Acate. Il Moro is Valle dell’Acate’s crown jewel, and has earned Italy’s vaunted DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) status for Nero d'Avola Sicilia DOC. The vineyards in Acate are located roughly 120 meters above sea level, where the earth is extremely dark, almost black in color. The soil has a compact, medium-density texture and is studded with small stones that aid in drainage.

The 2018 Nero d'Avola Il Moro is gorgeous from the first tilt of the glass, with a darkly alluring mix of ripe plums, balsam herbs, tobacco and hints of camphor that keep me coming back for more. This is silky in feel yet energetic, with dark red fruits and inner spices motivated by vibrant acidity, and a bump of sour citrus that seals the deal. There’s a bitter note that lingers through the finale, along with hints of cedar, all framed by subtle tannins. Give this a short stay in the cellar to show its best. - By Eric Guido on June 2022
