I love the textbook nose of the 2016 Señorío de P. Peciña Reserva, as it is earthy, spicy and developed, with notes of leather and vanilla and a touch of smoke and brick dust. It has ripe fruit without excess and a medium-bodied palate with great balance and freshness. It has pungent flavors and is powerful and ripe without excess at 14.5% alcohol and with polished chalky tannins. This matured in American oak barrels for 36 months, during which time it was racked every six months. 42,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2020.
95% Tempranillo – 3% Graciano – 2% Garnacha
Made from estate vineyards in San Vicente, the village and subregion at the heart of the La Rioja Alta region where Contador, Vega-Sicilia-Rothschild, Remelluri, and Abel Mendoza, among many other great producers, source many of the grapes for their wines. Grapes come from mixed age young to old vines, but all picked at very low yields. 36 months in used American oak, and during this time it is racked six times from cask to cask, racking it off the sediments by gravity. It then usually spends another 18 months rounding off in the bottle.
