2019 Ripa Rosado

94 pts John Gilman – A View from the Cellar
"As I mentioned last year, José Luis Ripa only started his own label in the last couple of years, dedicated to solely making Rioja Rosado. He probably has plenty of red and white Rioja in his cellar to drink already, as his wife is Maria José López de Heredia! His 2019 Rosado is another stunning wine, crafted from a cépages of eighty-five percent Garnacha and fifteen percent Tempranillo, with the wine is fermented and raised in older, French oak demi-muids for eighteen months. The bouquet is bright, classy and complex, wafting from the glass in a mix of strawberries, watermelon, orange peel, salty soil tones, a touch of Rioja brown spices, a discreet touch of oak and a top note of dried rose petals. On the palate the wine is crisp, full-bodied, complex and impeccably balanced, with a fine core of fruit, superb mineral undertow and grip, impressive focus and a long, vibrant and elegant finish. This is brilliant Rosado! " John Gilman, View from the Cellar 3/14/2024

"José Luis Ripa is married to María José López de Heredia, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that they both make superb rosados. This is a very subtle, savoury blend of Garnacha and Tempranillo that's released with some bottle age. Redcurrant, wild strawberry, nutmeg and cinnamon flavours are embellished by subtle oak spices and a hint of forest floor. 2024-27"

Jose Luis Ripa
Jose Luis Ripa is passionate about two things: his native Rioja, and incredible rosé. Born and raised in this famous Spanish region, speaking with Jose Luis is like speaking with a walking encyclopedia of Rioja's history (past, present and even future). His knowledge is frankly unrivalled.

He spent a good chunk of his career working at the historic CVNE estate, before joining the equally historic, and highly acclaimed Lopez de Heredia in 2010. Here he fell in love with their sensational aged Rioja rosé ... and also Maria Lopez de Heredia, who he married two years later (he even proposed with a bottle of their famous rosé).
During his Master of Wine studies, Jose Luis also travelled extensively, discovering more amazing examples of aged rosé (Domaine Tempier, Chateau Simone, Clos Cibonne, Lopez de Heredia, etc.) that further ignited his obsession. With the support of his wife, and their family at Lopez de Heredia, Jose Luis started the 'Ripa' project in 2016 with the view of crafting the ultimate aged Rioja rosé that pays homage to all the great rosé styles.
