Limite Cabernet Franc Costa Toscana is created from the finest selection of Cabernet Franc grapes grown along the Tuscan Coast in one of the most beautiful settings with some of the best conditions for growing this noble variety, which has found a new home in this corner of Tuscany. The choice of grapes to make Limite always involves a careful selection of the best bunches in the vineyard, followed by the separate vinification of the grapes from the most appropriate parcels according to the climate over the year, resulting in an elegant, characterful wine with a strong varietal identity, a great Mediterranean wine but with a fresh, dynamic quality, able to convey all the energy, power and character of Costa Toscana Cabernet Franc.
Age of the vines: Approximately 30 years
Fermentation: Spontaneous, using yeasts naturally present on the grapes
Vinification: The grapes were picked by hand and then fermented in small open vessels with around 30% of the bunches left whole. Skin contact for 16 days with daily punch-downs.
Aging: Approximately 10 months in new wood casks
My Tasting Note
Tasted over a few nights, this is quite the Tuscan iteration of Cab Franc, and quite a very good one at that...I really like it now, but I would like to see how this does with 5-7 more years more in bottle (and more, though I like most of my wines middle-aged). I say that because it started out very good, and only got better and better with air and over the days I tasted it the complexity each time was deeper and the wine's true character seemed to fall into shape each time exceptionally well. The fruit is prominent, but so is the spice and herbs that cab franc gives when grown/cropped the right way. The wine is perfectly balanced, the fruit, oak, spice all in harmony. If you like Le Macchiole's Paleo or most Bolgheri Super Tuscans you will like this one a lot, especially if you prefer the less overdone wines from the region like Sassicaia, Argenteira, Tua Rita and Grattamacco.
For the 2019 (not this 2020): 95 pts Robert Parker Wine Advocate
Emiliano Falsini has made some of the best wines of his career with Cabernet Franc. His organic 2019 Cabernet Franc Limite opens a new chapter and a more personal approach, winemaker to grape variety, that is shaped by dark concentration and beautiful balance. The difference between this higher-priced wine and the more accessible Il Debbio is that this wine only sees oak, whereas the other one sees a combination of oak and amphora. Both wines are made with whole cluster fermentation, something that is becoming a signature house style. Blackberry, black plum and grilled herb bring out the complexity of the bouquet. Production is 2,000 bottles.
