2021 Levet 'La Chavaroche' Cote Rotie
1.5L Magnum

96-98 Vinous Media (Josh Reynolds)
Displays potent, mineral-accented dark berry preserve, olive paste and incense aromas that are complemented by floral oil, pipe tobacco and exotic spice flourishes. Chewy, densely packed and sharply focused on the palate, offering intense, spice-laced blackberry, blueberry, bitter cherry, violet pastille and smoky bacon flavors that turn livelier with air. Closes on an emphatic mineral note, with solid thrust, gripping tannins and superb, floral-tinged persistence. - By Josh Raynolds on December 2022

The cuvée that we have imported from the outset (1983 vintage) is from the “Chavaroche” vineyard. As explained above, this wine is aged for thirty to thirty-six months prior to bottling. It is, quite simply, a ferocious wine, unique in its uninhibited expression of the smells and flavors of the appellation. No compromise is brooked here.
  • Staked and head trained, vines are planted at 8,000-9,000 vines/ha and average 45 years old.
  • Lutte raisonnée farming. Mostly copper-sulfate and other organic treatments.
  • Annual working of the soil to maintain vineyard health.
  • Journaries see 30-40% destemming, while Chavaroche ferments as whole clusters.
  • Journaries spends 24 months divided between 600-l demi muids and 30-hl foudres (15% new oak.) Chavaroche spends 24 months in 600-l demi muids, 30% of them new.
